A 50 × 80 m arena meets the outdoor minimum.

Training arenas: there is no mandatory size, as long as the arena allows wide turns and safe work.

Recommended orientation: north-south, to reduce glare at sunrise and sunset.

Footing: sub-base, base and riding surface; silica sand and sand mixed with fibres or geotextile are the most common surfaces.

Basic equipment: wings or stands, poles, cups, verticals and oxers, cavaletti, flags, numbers and perimeter fencing.

Planning a show jumping arena: key decisions before you start

Before building a riding arena, define what you need and study the available space. Good planning helps you spread the investment and avoid changes once the facility is in use.

What will your arena be used for: training, competition or riding school?

The intended use drives most design decisions. A riding school needs versatile facilities with jumps that adapt to different levels. A show jumping yard needs more complex courses and a wider range of equipment. If you plan to host competitions, the dimensions and warm-up area must comply with the rules.

Also consider how many horses will use the arena each day and how often. These figures determine the size, how durable the equipment must be and how much space you need to store and set up courses. If you are planning a whole equestrian centre, our guide to planning equestrian equipment in 2026 will help.

Location and orientation: ground and sunlight

Ideally, choose relatively flat, stable ground with good water run-off. Steep slopes increase earthworks and make it harder to achieve an even base.

A north-south orientation reduces glare from the low sun early and late in the day, which is exactly when most riders train in summer. Also plan for machinery access, proximity to the stables and water and power connections.

Show jumping arena dimensions and layout

The size of the arena determines how jumps are laid out, how wide the turns can be and which exercises are possible. That is why dimensions are fixed before deciding how many jumps to install.

Show jumping arena size according to FEI rules

There is no single size: training arenas and official competition venues have different needs. For competition, the FEI Jumping Rules (2026 edition, Art. 241) set these minimums:

Arena type

Minimum area

Minimum shortest side

Valid example

Outdoor (FEI competition)

4,000 m² (≈43,000 sq ft)

50 m (164 ft)

50 × 80 m

Indoor (FEI competition)

1,200 m² (≈12,900 sq ft)

25 m (82 ft)

25 × 48 m

Training

No regulatory minimum

Depends on use

Adapted to the space

The FEI may authorise exceptions. For national shows, also check your national federation’s requirements and the conditions of each class. If you also school dressage, see the official FEI dressage arena dimensions, which are different.

Effective drainage: the foundation of a long-lasting arena

Standing water causes soft spots, uneven ground and loss of stability, so drainage must be solved when the ground is prepared. There are two approaches, which can be combined depending on soil permeability and rainfall:

Surface drainage: removes water through controlled slopes and accurate levelling.

Sub-surface drainage: uses pipes and draining materials under the surface to collect and carry water away.

In areas with heavy, sudden rainfall, such as the Mediterranean coast, it is especially important to stop water collecting in take-off and landing zones.

Entrances, exits and warm-up area

Access points must let horses, staff and maintenance machinery through comfortably. As a guide, gates between 3 and 4 metres (10–13 ft) wide are the most practical; a 4 m double gate lets a tractor and harrow in without removing fencing.

A separate warm-up area is also advisable, so horses getting ready do not interfere with the horse on course. In competition, FEI rules require the warm-up area to have at least one vertical and one oxer.

Show jumping arena footing: the most important investment for your horse

The surface has the greatest influence on comfort and safety when jumping. It must provide grip, stability and a consistent response on take-off and landing. Footing that is too hard, too deep or uneven increases the strain on the horse’s legs.

Footing layers: sub-base, base and riding surface

Layer

Function

Sub-base

Provides overall stability; prepared according to the natural ground.

Base

Spreads loads and helps drainage where the system requires it.

Riding surface

The layer in contact with the hoof; determines grip and cushioning.

Layer thickness, materials and separators should be specified in a technical project: there is no universal build-up for every type of ground and level of use.

Types of footing: silica sand, fibres, geotextile and blends

Silica sand: the most widely used. Its performance depends on grain size, grain shape and moisture. It works well but needs frequent watering and levelling.

Sand with fibres or geotextile: improves cohesion and limits movement of the material. It costs more upfront and component compatibility must be checked.

Treated sands and engineered blends: keep working conditions more consistent; maintenance depends on each formulation.

When deciding how to build a sand arena for horses, compare the total cost of installation and maintenance, not just the price of the material. Climate, water availability and the level of sport should all weigh in your choice.

Equipment for a show jumping arena

Once the arena is built, it is time to choose jumps and accessories. Equipment should let you change courses, adjust difficulty and stay safe. This is the basic kit to get started:

Item

What it is for

See at Equspaddock

Wings or stands

Vertical structure of each jump

Horse jumping obstacles

Poles

Build verticals, oxers and triple bars

Jumping poles

Cups and supports

Hold poles at different heights

Pole support

Cavaletti

Rhythm and stride work

Cavaletti

Flags and numbers

Jumping direction and course order

Flag set

Fencing and gates

Encloses the arena and keeps spectators apart

Fencing

Wings, poles and cups: the building blocks of every jump

Wings or stands form the vertical structure of the jump, while cups or supports hold the poles at different heights. Choose show jumping poles for strength, size, weight and ease of handling; our guide to show jumping poles compares materials and FEI standards.

Having spare poles and cups lets you change exercises without dismantling other jumps. Always check the condition of supports and use safety cups where required.

Verticals, walls and hedges

Verticals are the backbone of training: they work on line, approach and accuracy. Walls and hedges add visual references and should be built from purpose-made elements that reproduce their look without dangerous rigid structures. When choosing horse jumping obstacles, look for set-ups that adapt to different levels and are designed for equestrian use.

Oxers and triple bars: spread fences

Oxers combine two planes of poles to work on width; triple bars have three planes, usually in ascending order. Both require special attention to distances, supports and safety cups. To build varied courses, review the types of horse jumps and when to use each one.

Water jumps and liverpools

A water jump is a water obstacle used in some competition courses; a liverpool is placed under a fence to add a visual water reference. Installing them depends on the footing, visibility and the horses’ level of training: not every centre needs them from day one.

Cavaletti and ground poles for preparatory work

Before full courses, ground poles and cavaletti build rhythm, coordination and regular strides. They are essential for riding schools and training centres. Spacing depends on the horse and the gait; you will find distances and progressions in our cavaletti training exercises guide.

Safety: flags, numbers and protectors

Flags show the jumping direction: the red flag goes on the rider’s right and the white flag on the left. Numbers mark the course order and protectors reduce wear on the equipment. Regularly check that wings are stable, poles are in good condition and safety cups are fitted. You will find flags, numbers and accessories in our riding arena equipment.

Perimeter fencing and gates

Fencing defines the arena, organises access and keeps horses apart from spectators. Choose arena fencing for strength, visibility, installation system and maintenance. It also gives the whole centre a consistent look.

Irrigation: sprinklers or sub-irrigation

Moisture control is essential in sand arenas. Sprinklers water from above; sub-irrigation manages moisture from a system installed under the surface. The choice depends on the footing, climate, water consumption and budget.

Floodlighting for evening use

If you train after dark, lighting must be sufficient and even. LED systems improve energy efficiency, but they must be positioned to avoid shadows and glare on the approach to jumps.

Storage: pole carts and racks

Poles, wings and accessories need tidy, protected storage. Pole carts make moving equipment easier and reduce handling; proper racks prevent warping and knocks when equipment is not in use.

Common mistakes when building a show jumping arena

Choosing footing on price alone without costing maintenance over the coming years.

Leaving drainage for later: fixing it once the arena is finished means lifting layers.

Narrow gates that maintenance machinery cannot get through.

Buying too few poles and cups, so jumps have to be dismantled for every exercise.

No storage space, leaving equipment to deteriorate outdoors.

Show jumping arena maintenance

Every arena needs a maintenance plan suited to its footing and level of use. Regular care spots problems before they affect training.

Frequency

Tasks

Daily

Remove debris, harrow and level, especially at take-off, landing and turns.
