Types of dressage arenas

The dressage arena is a rectangle-shaped arena, which is delimited by plastic posts, where the horse is trained. Inside the arena, a series of exercises are carried out in which the horses improve certain skills such as obedience and balance.

Several letters are distributed on the arena, which are used to perform the movements rehearsed in the training sessions, and this set of exercises according to the letters are called reprise.

All the participants in the same category of the competition perform the same reprise and are judged on the basis of this reprise.

What activities take place in the dressage arena?

Dressage is a discipline based on the harmony between rider and horse in which a series of exercises of great difficulty are performed, according to a predefined programme established by the reprise. The movements that the horse executes require a great deal of training and preparation of the team. These exercises are based on stepping, trotting, and galloping.

Driving dressage arenas

Driving is a modality in which the horse is driven when it is harnessed to a carriage. The team of horses can be made up of one horse (limonera), two (tronco) or four (cuartas).

Within this modality there are several types of competitions:

  • Training. The ease of movement and the correct position of the horses are assessed. The driver is assessed on his style and ability to lead his team.
  • Endurance. The physical fitness of the horses and the skill and control of the driver are tested.
  • Obstacles. The carriage and horses must pass between the flags which define each obstacle without hitting the carriage…

Equitation is a very attractive world for many people, because of its romantic and elegant atmosphere, inherited from the origins of this sport, around the 18th century. If this appeals to you, you should know the basic equipment for one of its disciplines: dressage. One of them is the dressage arena, which is described in detail below.

What is a dressage arena?

A dressage arena is a place delimited by a series of posts shaped like a rectangle, generally made of plastic, which allows training with the horse to be carried out in a more efficient way. Inside the arena, horses perform a series of exercises in order to learn certain skills such as obedience and balance.

Features of a dressage arena

Dressage arena measurements are adjusted according to the level of the discipline. For the preliminary and intermediate levels, the dimensions are 20×40 metres; for the advanced level, 20×60 metres are required. Each of these arenas is marked with letters indicating where the dressage movements or figures will be performed, so that they can be correctly executed.
These letters are placed on the outer edge of the dressage arena and symbolise the starting of the exercises to be performed, which are originally from Germany. For example, the letter V stands for the circle and it means “volte” in German. In addition, the dressage arena also has dots indicating the centre of the circles, one of the movements to be performed in this discipline.
Furthermore, there are regulations for using a dressage arena effectively. For instance, when a rider wishes to get on or off a horse, this must be done on the centre line of the arena, and if the rider needs to enter or leave the arena, they have to ask for permission to the riders who are training or to the teacher.
